Venmo is a popular P2P digital payment platform that allows friends and family to quickly split purchases and transfer money to each other; however, it still has limited features for more complex use cases such as splitting bill costs when everyone orders items of different prices.

The goal of this project was to create a simple user experience for users split the bill efficiently between their friends.

Problem Context

Splitting the bill is a pain.
More often times than not, my friends end up facing the same problem when going out to eat as a group. Traditional bill-splitting methods, such as manual calculations, often lead to confusion, disputes, and wasted time.

The lack of a dedicated bill-splitting feature within Venmo creates a need for an improved and user-friendly solution.

Over 70% of respondent stated they used other apps to help calculate individual shares of the bill.
To further understand the problem space, a user survey was created and received over 30 responses. Here are the main frustration insights that were collected:

Venmo users found splitting the bills to be tedious and uncomfortable.
I interviewed 3 Venmo users (targeting the most active user segment of 18-29 year olds) to gather more in-depth answers of the pain points that may arise when splitting bills. Here are some of the things that were brought up:

Most of the respondents found that calculating the exact costs of everyone to be a complex and time-consuming process. Users also found themselves manually calculating on outside apps like the calculator to split payments, which proved to be error-prone, especially when group size exceeded three people.

To avoid disputes between users, having a break down of expenses provide instant calculations of individuals shares of the bill. This allows users to have complete visibility into how the bill is being split among the group.

After sticking with the design solutions, I charted a basic idea of what paths a user would take to use the new features. Since this was going to be an integration feature on an existing app, the flow focuses on providing a seamless and intuitive experience.

After establishing our potential solutions, I took to low fidelity wireframes to get a rough idea on what the features would look within the app. For the most part, the designs are consistent with Venmo's existing UI to maintain familiarity and to reduce the need to learn new app features.

By incorporating the Groups feature, users can efficiently select multiple people at once and assign individual items to entire groups, making the bill-splitting process even convenient, especially for situations where expenses are shared among predefined groups of friends or roommates.

During early stages of our high-fidelity prototypes, we had an "auto-bill" button. However, during user testing, a lot of users were confused if this was a button used to split purchases. For this reason, it has been replaced with a toggle button.

While the totals were calculated within the app, our users during testing would still leave the app to calculate tip percentages. In order to reduce having to app-hop, a tip selection keypad was added as well as a preview of the totals breakdown.
